fired-trooper-enciniaOfficer Brian Encinia will be fired from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). That announcement came after he was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday, according to Fusion.

The department said that Encinia will have to look for work elsewhere now, since he was indicted for perjury for lying on his report regarding the arrest.

The charge is a Class A misdemeanor, carrying with it a possible one-year prison sentence.

The indictment came from a Texas grand jury which resumed investigation into the arrest of Bland earlier this week.

Bland, 28, was found unconscious in a Waller County jail cell last year. She had a plastic bag tied around her neck, even though she was arrested on a minor charged during a traffic stop.

She was found just three days after her arrest, with release imminent. This has led many to speculate that she was killed by police for asserting her rights, and because of her work as a police accountability activist.

Officer Encinia can be seen on dash cam video man-handling Bland during the stop for “failure to signal”.

Encinia can be heard threatening on the video: “I will light you up.”

Now, he is accused of lying about how he removed Bland from the vehicle – his testimony being plainly contradicted by the clear video evidence.

The department originally criticized Encinia for what they called a failure to “maintain professionalism” during the traffic stop.
