  • Oct : 19 : 2019 - CONREX Property Management Violates Women’s Domestic Violence Act

A widow whose husband honorably served multiple tours of duty in Iran/Iraq only to be shot down and killed while visiting his hometown is now facing gun violence once more. It took some time for this young woman to enter the dating scene. However, unlike the courageous hero she buried, she ended up with a coward who has twice put a gun to her head and threatened her two youngest children that remain in the home. In addition to staring down the barrel of a gun, the widower, whose name and city we are withholding due to the imminent danger she is in has met an unlawful obstacle. You see, she has a lease with CONREX Property Management who, intentionally, and willfully are in violation of the Women’s Domestic Violence Act, refused to allow a victim of dome although she has presented them with verifiable documents, specifically, police reports to support her request. This is a woman with an impeccable payment history so we surmise they certainty do not wish to lose such a great tenant. However, this victim of domestic violence has a right by law to break her lease and not have both her credit and rental history tarnished.

The VAWA was reauthorized with unanimous support in April of 2019. However, Betty, the manager in this particular office states that the victim should simply get a restraining order. We impressed upon her the number of women that have been killed while restraining orders are in place and informed her that the best course of action is to allow the victim to break her lease and leave the sate, stealthy. CONREX’s actions are in direct violation of the The Landlord-Tenant Act.

We also reached out to Brian Sweeney, the Regional Manager of CONREX who has not only refused to discuss the victims concerns although we have presented permission to do so on behalf of the widow. Now we are uncertain if this nonchalant, lackadaisical refusal is racially motivated or not. However, if all lives matter, this blatant disregard for the safety of this domestic violence victim who is African American, should be afforded the same protections as any non minority has the privilege of receiving. Therefore, we are curious to know if this is a common practice with CONREX , and more specifically to know what type of tenants are being denied lease release without the burden of negative mark to their credit, and rental history.

We are asking any other tenants across state lines who have leased with CONREX if they have experienced the same of similar issue with CONREX,
