Freeway Insurance’s Branch Manager Caught Violating the South Carolina’s Unfair Trade Practices Act (“SCUTPA”)
On about February 26th, 2021 the Branch Manager for Freeway Insurance, Victoria Baylock responded to a consumer seeking vehicle insurance. Baylock found coverage through Progressive Insurance and provided the consumer with a choice of coverages. Baylock misrepresented the coverage by claiming that the down payment was less if the consumer selected a plan in which she would have to maker a larger upfront downpayment in order to obtain a lower monthly payment. Or, she could pay less down and have a larger monthly payment. driverschoiceinsurance.com
Baylock also claimed the consumer could elect to change the PIP coverage because the option was locked. When the consumer inquired as to why, Baylock claimed that the feature would be adjusted once she signed the docs. Baylock was incessantly untruthful. That information was false.
The consumer reviewed the docs realizing that Progressive was only paid $200 of the down payment. The remainder was unaccounted for.
The additional $137.74 the branch manager charged the consumer was never paid to Progressive Insurance. Instead, without disclosing that the consumer had been sold two third party ‘add ons’ . (Medical and roadside assistance).
A series of emails were exchanged to include the consumer requesting the reversal of the additional payment for products she did not specifically or expressly request or need. The consumer explained that she already had medical care on another policy and also roadside service.
The overcharge was discovered shortly afters and Baylock promised to rectify the overcharge that she claimed was a down payment. However, the consumer learned that the additional amount showing in the itemized slot. In fact, Progressive Insurance stated that they did not even sell the roadside insurance or medical benefit Baylock was peddling as an add-on masquerading as a down payment. IATD has reported this matter to the South Carolina Department of Insurance. We will share an update as soon as one is available to us.
